Language

Configure the speech-to-text engine and supported languages for this profile.

The Language tab controls how the virtual being understands spoken input on this profile – which speech-to-text engine processes audio, and which languages users can speak in.

STT engine

Select the Speech-to-Text (STT) engine that will transcribe user voice input for this profile. The engines available in the dropdown are those that are already configured under Configurations→ Speech to Text.

Different profiles can use different STT engines – for example, a kiosk profile might use Azure for its noise-robustness, while a web widget profile uses a different provider.

If the STT engine dropdown is empty, go to Speech to Text and configure at least one engine first.

Languages

The language list defines which languages this profile supports. Users can interact in any language on the list, and the virtual being will respond in the active language using the matching voice configured in the Persona. Properly selecting the languages influences whether the users' voice input is correctly transcribed by the Speech-to-text engine.

Adding languages

Click + Add language and select from the available options. The first language you add becomes the default – the language the virtual being uses when a new conversation starts.

Default language

The top language in the list is the default. Drag to reorder, or click the "Set as default" option in the more menu on any language to promote it.

Adding a language here does not automatically give the virtual being a voice in that language. Go to the Persona assigned to this profile and configure a voice for each supported language under Voices → Add voice. Some text-to-speech services offer Multilingual voices – using those is highly recommended for voice consistency when switching between languages.

Language detection and switching

The virtual being can detect when a user switches language mid-conversation and respond accordingly. This behaviour is controlled by the On Language Change Handler in the Conversation Editor – see Handlers → On Language Change for configuration details. The language recognition works only for the languages defined in the above described language settings of the profile.

If you have not configured the On Language Change Handler, the virtual being will continue responding in the default language regardless of what language the user writes or speaks.
